Introduction
The MinION Sequencer, developed by Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), is a compact, portable, and real-time sequencing device that enables direct analysis of DNA and RNA molecules using nanopore technology.
Unlike traditional sequencing systems, MinION detects nucleotide sequences by measuring changes in electrical current as nucleic acid strands pass through protein nanopores embedded in a membrane.
It provides long-read sequencing, which is highly valuable for genome assembly, microbial identification, and mutation detection, including in fungi, bacteria, and viruses.
Applications of the MinION Sequencer
1. Fungal and Bacterial Identification
- Enables rapid whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of pathogens for accurate species-level identification.
- Useful for detecting mixed infections, drug resistance genes, and novel species in clinical mycology and bacteriology.
2. Metagenomics and Environmental Studies
3. Clinical and Epidemiological Research
- Detects antifungal resistance genes, virulence factors, and genetic mutations in hospital outbreaks
- Valuable for public health surveillance and real-time pathogen tracing.
4. Transcriptome (RNA) Sequencing
- Allows direct RNA sequencing without reverse transcription, preserving base modifications and real-time transcriptional data.
5. Portable Field Sequencing
- Lightweight and powered via USB, making it ideal for on-site sequencing in hospitals, remote labs, or field research.
- Used in outbreak response (e.g., Ebola, COVID-19, fungal outbreak surveillance).
6. Agricultural and Veterinary Genomics
- Used in crop pathogen detection, animal health monitoring, and food safety genomics.
Keynotes on MinION Sequencer
